Golden retrievers are basically sunshine wrapped in fur… with a side of absolute chaos and a strong commitment to putting literally everything in their mouth.
For 11-month-old Sully, being a puppy means spending his days making friends at doggy daycare, charming his kitty siblings, and perfecting his signature golden retriever smile. While he’s currently deep in his teenage rebellion era (selective hearing fully activated, recall on a very flexible schedule), his parents will be the first to tell you he’s the sweetest, calmest pup underneath all the chaos.
But earlier this year, that easygoing puppy energy suddenly shifted when Sully developed a severe limp, and his family found themselves facing a worrying unknown.

When “Maybe It’s Nothing” Turns into Multiple Vet Visits
At first, his family wasn’t sure whether it was normal puppy clumsiness or something more serious. Like many large-breed dog parents, they worried about possibilities like hip dysplasia or other developmental issues. or other developmental issues.
As they worked to get answers, Sully underwent multiple vet visits, x-rays, tests, and medications to determine what was causing the pain.
The diagnosis? Panosteitis. Often called “growing pains,” it’s a condition that can happen in growing puppies when the long bones in their legs become inflamed and painful. It can cause sudden limping that seems to appear out of nowhere, sometimes even shifting from one leg to another.
Thankfully, after a few weeks of treatment and recovery, Sully was back to his happy, playful, silly smiley self.

Over $1,000 in Vet Bills
While Sully’s condition wasn’t life-threatening, getting answers still came at a cost. In total, Sully’s family submitted over $1,000 in vet bills related to his care, and Furkin covered 80% of the eligible costs.
But for Sully’s parents, the support went beyond just this one claim.
"It is also a huge bonus that Furkin covers basic exam costs.
Sully has been to the vet a few times to rule out smaller issues like UTIs, eye infections, allergies, etc., and that alone has saved us a lot of money and helped tremendously."

Peace of Mind Through Every Puppy Phase
One of the hardest parts of raising a puppy is figuring out what’s normal, what’s not, and when it’s time to call the vet.
For Sully’s family, having pet insurance meant they didn’t have to second-guess seeking care or worry about the financial stress of getting answers. meant they didn’t have to second-guess seeking care or worry about the financial stress of getting answers.

“While this thankfully wasn't a huge illness or accident, Furkin has provided excellent customer service when needed, and the reimbursements are always provided in a timely manner.”
And now? Sully is back to living his best golden retriever life: running around with friends, spreading smiles everywhere he goes, and keeping his parents entertained with his ongoing teenage antics.

Because one scoop is never enough.
