Claims Made Simple 📝

Your guide to submitting a Furkin claim

Submitting a claim shouldn't feel complicated. We’ll walk you through every step so you can submit with confidence and get back to what matters most: your pet.

How claims work

From your visit at the vet to reimbursement in your account, here’s how your claim moves through the Furkin process step-by-step.

Pay your invoice

When your pet needs care for an unexpected accident or illness, head to your vet and take care of the bill at the time of your visit. With Furkin, you pay upfront, then submit your claim to be reimbursed for eligible costs.

Submit your claim

Once you’ve got your invoice, send us your completed claim form(s) along with your receipts. You can submit by email, fax, or mail. Claims should be submitted within 90 days of treatment (or within 90 days of your policy ending).

Claim is reviewed

As soon as we’ve received everything we need, our Claims Team gets to work reviewing your claim. Every claim is a little different, but we always aim to process things as quickly as possible.

Medical records request

Sometimes we’ll need a bit more information from your hospital, like your pet’s medical records, to complete our review. We will take care of requesting and collecting those for you at the time of your claim. This helps us make sure everything is assessed accurately! Please note: medical records are required for your first submission.

Claim is processed

Once our review is complete, our team will determine what's eligible under your policy, including any applicable deductible and co-insurance.

Reimbursement is sent 🎉

You’ll receive a notification with the outcome of your claim and an explanation of why, so you always know where things stand. If eligible for reimbursement, your payment will be deposited directly into your account.

Common mistakes to avoid

A few small oopsies can slow things down. But the good news? They’re easy to avoid with a little extra paw-some prep.

Furkin - receipt

Missing proof of payment

Don't forget itemized receipts, too! We need both pieces of the puzzle.
Furkin -- Camera

Blurry photos of receipts

Clear, well-lit photos = faster claims.
Hubspot Claims 101 (1)

Missing pages, forms, or receipts

Before you hit submit, do a quick check to make sure everything’s there so nothing slows things down!
Furkin -- waiting periods

Submitting within the waiting period

We get it. When something happens, you want to submit ASAP! But you must wait until your coverage kicks in after your waiting periods: 48 hours for accidents, 14 days for illnesses, and 180 days for cruciate ligament conditions.
Furkin -- Medical condition

Omitting the medical reason for the vet visit

The more specific you are about the condition being treated, the better! For example, instead of “medication refill,” include the condition being treated, like “broken leg.”
Furkin -- Medical records

No medical records

To review and process your first claim, we need your pet’s complete medical history. If your hospital requires your permission to release records to us, make sure you have provided that permission!

How claims are calculated

Loving your pet is easy – and understanding how claims are paid should be, too!

At Furkin, we keep things simple with annual deductibles, making it easier to plan for vet visits. When calculating your claims reimbursement, the co-insurance is applied first to all eligible expenses, followed by the annual deductible.

Example #1: You are making your first claim of the year and your eligible veterinary costs are: $850

Hubspot Claim Denied

Example #2: You have previously satisfied your annual deductible** with an earlier claim in same Policy Year

Furkin claim example

We encourage all Furkin members (and future members) to read the Furkin policy to get a full understanding of our coverage, waiting periods, limitations, and exclusions.

*Deductible amount as per your selected policy options.
**Once you have fully paid your annual deductible amount, you will not have to pay any further deductibles on any claims you make for the remainder of your policy year.

Why a claim might be denied

Understanding claim decisions

A quick look at the most common reasons a claim may be denied, so there are no surprises along the way.

Common reasons claims aren’t covered:

  • Submitted within waiting periods
  • No pre-policy exam
  • ❌ Claim is for treatment or diagnosis of a pre-existing condition
  • Missing documents
  • Treatment not eligible under your policy (i.e. bilateral conditions, preventive care, wellness, etc.)

FAQs

Reimbursing your claims is a priority for us. We use direct deposit to reimburse claims so that your claims reimbursement gets to you quickly by depositing directly into your bank account!

We will process all reimbursement requests – whether simple or complex – as quickly as possible, once we have received all of the required documentation.

You can find more information on how to complete your claims and time expectations for reimbursement on our Members page.

We will process your claims as quickly as possible! Your first claim, or some more complex claims, can take longer as we may need to contact your veterinarian for more information (such as requesting medical records from your clinic). As soon as we’ve received everything we need, our Claims Team gets to work reviewing your claim.

Many insurance providers – pet or otherwise – may have waiting periods, which is the amount of time a policyholder must wait before some or all of their coverage comes into effect.

There are several waiting periods in place that dictate when your coverage becomes available for accidents, illness, or other events. With a Furkin Policy, you must wait the following waiting periods before coverage becomes available for your pet:

  • For accidents – 48 hours
  • For illnesses – 14 days
  • For Cruciate Ligament Conditions – 180 days

All Waiting Periods begin at 12:00 a.m. on your Policy Effective Date. Learn more about Furkin’s waiting periods on Page 8 of the Sample Policy.

Yes, you will need to make these arrangements directly with your veterinarian’s office.

No. At Furkin, we do not penalize pets who have had to claim more nor do we change your premium due to your pet’s specific medical history at enrollment or renewal.

For example, let’s say you and your neighbour each adopt a 9-month-old Labrador Retriever and enroll both of your pets with Furkin. You both have the same monthly premium since the demographics of your pet are identical. In year one, you have claimed and been reimbursed for $2,500 in medical expenses and your neighbour’s pet has luckily been in good health and not had to submit any medical claims. When you and your neighbour’s policies renew after 12 months, the two premiums may have gone up or down from what you paid in year one (learn about how pet insurance premiums are calculated), but you will both be paying the same new monthly cost for year two since we do not penalize pets that have been “unlucky” and required medical care.
