Eddie’s Journey Home

Furkin Pet Insurance | Jul 25, 2023

In a world where stories of lost pets sometimes end in heartbreak, buckle up for this remarkable journey of Furkin member, Edward. This beloved fur baby of the Masters Family spent twelve heart-pounding days on the run in the wild, capturing the hearts of many and rallied support from strangers turned heroes. Eddie’s harrowing adventure stands out as a testament to the remarkable courage of pets and the power of love, even from strangers.

Eddie’s Story

Edward, also known as Eddie or by his Chinese name Ai-Li, which means ‘lovely’, was born in China and was easily known as the runt of the litter. While living in China, Eddie the 1.8-year-old Tibetan Spaniel and German Spitz mix, mastered stealth and survival instinct, which would prove invaluable on this twelve-day adventure.

On Valentine’s Day this year, Eddie left his home and his beloved family and quickly got lost in the wild in Oshawa, Ontario. The Masters, Eddie’s family, were quick to reach out to Furkin Pet Insurance, Eddie’s pet insurance company, to see if they could avail of Furkin’s healthy perks for members that include lost pet advertising and rewards benefits. Furkin quickly jumped to help and covered $1,000 of materials including posters, tape, markers, a reward benefit and more to aid in the search for Eddie. And so, The Masters got to work posting flyers and spreading the word in an effort to find Eddie.

The Forrest Gump Moment

For twelve days, Eddie braved the unknown of the wilderness and faced the fear of never seeing his human family again. Then, like a scene out of a movie, fate intervened. A compassionate couple passing through Ashburn, Ontario, approximately 25 minutes from Eddie’s home, noticed the overwhelming number of missing posters and signs for Eddie. So when they saw brave Eddie before them, they knew he was the missing pup.

They didn’t chase him. They didn’t holler. They patiently waited. And their patience was rewarded.

King Edward, as he had come to be known, appeared before them and decided to stop running. Having lost eight pounds from his already petite 20-pound frame, Eddie dashed directly into their waiting car and was over the moon that his solitary adventure in the wild was finally over.

Eddie’s Return

Team Chelsea, a volunteer non-profit search group for lost and found pets for the region of Durham, Ontario, returned Eddie home safely to the Masters Family. Team Chelsea helped rally the community utilizing many great resources, including the lost pet ad materials Furkin Pet Insurance helped to cover, in hopes of the safe return of Eddie. While Eddie was on the run, his story managed to raise around $3,000, which is all going directly to Team Chelsea to help the next lost or found pet.

Although Eddie returned home safe and sound, it was evident that the adventure had left its mark on him. He returned home changed, hardened and sensitive to sudden movements or noises, but the unconditional love of his family provided Eddie comfort and reassurance. Each member of the Masters family had a unique bond with Eddie, and their presence played a vital role in helping him regain a sense of familiarity and readjust to his regular life as it was prior to his adventurous escapade.

Final Paw-spectives

Eddie was gone a while, from February 14th to February 26th of 2023, and anyone who had the opportunity to meet Eddie would always wonder how he survived. Eddie is a fighter and his adventure serves as a reminder of the power of community support and the dedication and importance of organizations like Team Chelsea and Furkin Pet Insurance
