Chris didn't plan on falling in love with a cat. But when he rescued Buddy - a scrappy, curious, two-year-old tabby with a mischievous streak and absolutely no concept of personal space – their bond was instantaneous.
#FurkinFamily member Buddy is beige and orange, full of energy, and completely runs the household. He greets Chris at the door every single day. He has a signature ankle ambush he deploys on unsuspecting house guests. He maintains a rotation of secret hiding spots: curled up in a clothes drawer under the bed, perched on top of the fridge, stretched out in whatever corner of the house you'd least expect. His favourite toy is a cat spring, and he will chase it across the floor as many times as you're willing to throw it.

He came from a difficult situation. But in Chris' home, Buddy found exactly what he needed — someone who would show up for him, no matter what.
One day, Buddy’s mischievous nature got him into some serious trouble, and Chris was about to find out just how far he’d go to protect the cat who had come to mean everything to him.
The Small Thing That Turned Into a Big Emergency
Buddy had a habit of chewing on things he shouldn’t. Elastics and hair ties turned out to be a particular favourite.

One day, Buddy suddenly vomited up a couple of hair ties. At first, it seemed like the situation had passed, but it quickly became clear that something wasn’t right.
Buddy wasn’t acting like himself.
He stopped eating and drinking. His energy disappeared. The playful cat who normally raced through the house had become quiet and lethargic.
Chris knew something was wrong.
He rushed Buddy to an emergency veterinary clinic, where X-rays revealed the problem: one of the hair ties Buddy had swallowed had become stuck in his intestines.
The only way to remove it was surgery.
A Scary Moment for Any Pet Parent
The veterinary team acted quickly. Within hours, Buddy was in surgery to remove the obstruction.
Thankfully, the procedure was a success.
Recovery was quick. Before long, the ankle ambushes were back. The fridge perch was reoccupied. The spring toy was back in rotation.

When the Vet Bills Add Up
Emergency surgery is never cheap, and Buddy's procedure came in at over $3,000. It's the kind of bill that can turn a scary moment into an overwhelming one — unless you're prepared.
Thankfully, Chris had Furkin Pet Insurance, so he could focus on Buddy, not the bills.
Submitting the claim was simple. Chris downloaded the forms, attached the veterinary receipts, and sent everything in by email.
“Within a week my claim was filed and reimbursed without question,” he shared.
Furkin covered 80% of the eligible cost, making a stressful situation much easier to manage.
“I was glad I had the coverage,” Chris said.

Back to Causing Mischief
Today, Buddy is fully recovered and back to doing what he does best: keeping his family entertained.
He still greets Chris at the door. He still launches himself at the ankles of all house guests. And he still spends plenty of time chasing his favourite spring toys across the floor.
Buddy’s curiosity might occasionally land him in trouble, but one thing is certain: he’s very loved, and very Furkin covered.

Will my premiums go up if my dog or cat gets sick?▶
No. At Furkin, we do not penalize pets who have had to claim more nor do we change your premium due to your pet’s specific medical history at enrollment or renewal. For example, let’s say you and your neighbour each adopt a 9-month-old Labrador Retriever and enroll both of your pets with Furkin. You both have the same monthly premium since the demographics of your pet are identical. In year one, you have claimed and been reimbursed for $2,500 in medical expenses and your neighbour’s pet has luckily been in good health and not had to submit any medical claims. When you and your neighbour’s policies renew after 12 months, the two premiums may have gone up or down from what you paid in year one (learn about how pet insurance premiums are calculated), but you will both be paying the same new monthly cost for year two since we do not penalize pets that have been “unlucky” and required medical care.
How long does it take to get reimbursed for my claim?
▶
We will process your claims as quickly as possible! Your first claim, or some more complex claims, can take longer as we may need to contact your veterinarian for more information (such as requesting medical records from your clinic). Once we start our review and have all the needed information, the claim will likely be processed in the next 14 business days.
