How Much Do Dog Surgeries Cost?

Jessica Foster | Nov 28, 2023

No pet parent enjoys the worry and stress associated with scheduling a serious pet medical procedure. Whether your pup is injured, ill, or experiencing a chronic health condition, surgery is sometimes the recommended treatment.

But covering the costs of surgery for your dog shouldn’t add additional stress to your plate. While you may think that saving up money is the only option, the reality is that there are many ways to cover dog surgery costs.

In this guide, we outline the costs associated with the most common dog surgeries. We’ll also talk about options for how to cover dog surgery costs without paying for most of the fee out of pocket.

1. Spaying or Neutering

Spaying (Ovariohysterectomy) or neutering (Castration) are the most common dog surgeries due to most owners’ desire to prevent unwanted pet pregnancies or aggression. Spaying involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus in female dogs, while neutering involves the removal of the testicles in male dogs. Both are helpful when it comes to population control and pet safety.

The cost of a spay or neuter procedure can vary depending on your location, your chosen veterinary clinic, and the size of your pet. For a more accurate quote, be sure to contact your veterinarian.

When paying for these types of procedures, keep in mind that most pet insurance companies do not cover spaying or neutering. Review your pet insurance policy for eligibility.

Costs:

  • Male Dog under 15 kg - $190 CAD
  • Male Dog 15-30 kg - $220 CAD
  • Female Dog under 15 kg - $240 CAD
  • Female Dog 15-30 kg - $265 CAD

2. Dental Surgery

Dental issues are also a common occurrence in dogs and, if left untreated (or if the issue is severe), can require surgery. Some examples include tooth extractions, periodontal surgery ( in the treatment of periodontal disease), root canals, mass removals, and jaw fracture repairs.

Keep in mind that most pet insurance companies only cover dental items related to accidents, such as tooth fractures in an otherwise healthy tooth. Be sure to review your pet insurance policy for eligibility.

Costs:

The cost of dog dental surgery can vary widely depending on the specific procedure, but costs can run anywhere from $200 to $500 for a simple procedure to $6,000 for a root canal.

3. Tumour Removal

Unfortunately, just like humans, dogs can develop various types of tumours, some of which may be cancerous. Surgical removal of tumours is common and may involve removing benign or malignant growths. Several procedures may be needed in order to remove several tumours in their entirety.

Costs:

Costs for tumour removal vary depending on the severity and quantity of the tumour(s). In general tumour removal for dogs can cost anywhere from $200 to $10,000+.

4. Cruciate Ligament Repair (CCL/ACL Surgery)

Injuries to the cranial cruciate ligament are common in dogs, particularly in large breeds. Your veterinarian may recommend surgery in order to stabilize the knee joint and improve your dog’s mobility.

Costs:

ACL surgery for dogs typically cost between $1,500 to $4,000, though some sources say costs can exceed $5,000 or more.

5. Ear Surgery

Dogs’ ears can be sensitive and are prone to issues. These issues can advance to the point of needing more involved treatment or surgery. Ear problems, such as infections or chronic ear inflammation, can require surgery to clean the ear canals or treat underlying internal issues.

Costs:

Dog ear surgery costs will vary depending on the procedure. The most common procedure, ear hematoma surgery, can range between $400 and $3,500 (cost has been converted from USD to CAD).

6. Gastrointestinal Surgery

A sick pup often warrants a visit to the vet and, if serious enough, may require surgery to address underlying issues. Gastrointestinal issues are also a common occurrence, given our pups’ propensity to eat things that they shouldn't. Dogs may require surgery for issues like foreign body ingestion, bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), or intestinal obstructions.

Costs:

Gastro-surgery costs can range from $1,200 to $5,000

7. Orthopedic Surgeries

Orthopedic surgery can help address musculoskeletal issues such as fractures, hip dysplasia, and joint problems (like luxating patellas). Your dog may need this surgery if their mobility is hindered by musculoskeletal problems and/or they are experiencing immense pain.

Costs:

Costs may vary depending on the specific surgery but typically range from $140 to $4,100 (costs converted from USD to CAD)

8. Cesarean Section (C-Section)

Though we always hope a pup’s pregnancy will go according to plan, sometimes they need a little extra help. In the case that your pregnant dog is unable to give birth naturally or is at risk during labour, a cesarean section may be necessary to deliver the puppies safely.

When paying for these types of procedures, keep in mind that most pet insurance companies do not cover C-sections. Review your pet insurance policy for eligibility.

Costs:

Costs for C-sections may range from $680 to $5,400 (prices converted from USD to CAD)
